Modified Vaccination Schedule

Adalei had her 3 month check up this week...12 pounds and 23.5 inches, which surprisingly puts her in the 25-35th percentile...and here I was thinking she looked like a tiny little linebacker with all those adorable rolls. I thought she was going to be in the 60th percentile or something...seriously--the girl has some rolls, guys.

SO--Neil and I talked a lot about it...I did a TON of research and prayed like crazy and we decided on modified vaccination schedule. The doctors were not completely happy about it because it goes against the American Academy of Peds...but I kept repeating to myself (as Dr. Griffith tried to convince me to follow the normal schedule) "I'm the mama, I'm the mama, I'm the mama". I'm not going to lie..I almost caved. I am so NOT assertive. So NOT assertive. I try...I like to think I am, but I am not. I rarely--if ever--complain or send dishes back at restaurants. I never argue a store's return policy...I pretty much suck it up and deal with it because me and confrontation = NOT FRIENDS. Anyway...I was so worried that I'd cave, so the fact that I stood my ground with confidence was an answer to prayer.

Fortunately, Dr. Griffith looked at the schedule and gave me her blessing, well, as much as she could because she has to stick with the AAP guidelines. I think she was somewhat relieved that I didn't go for the Dr. Sears vaccination schedule :-)

So--what does the new schedule look like...

Hep B: Delay until a year before she starts school
HIB: 4 mos, 6 mos, 8 mos, 17 mos
IVP: 4 mos, 6 mos, 8 mos, 17 mos
DtaP: 5 mos, 7 mos, 9 mos, 16 mos
Prevnar: One dose @ 4 mos
Varicela: decline
MMR: 18 mos

So there it is in all its glory. Essentially what I've done is spread them out so that she is getting no more than two at a time (except for 4 mos when she'll get the Prevnar). SO, I'll be going every month--which is fine--and she won't be getting the crazy cocktails of shots so early on.

If anyone is interested in the articles and books I researched...let me know and I'll pass them on to you. There is SO much out there...so much misinformation on both sides its frustrating as a parent for sure.

NEXT post..RUNNING...as speed work has not yet commenced, I'll have no stories of wetting my pants post baby--I assure you :-)

Email me your research STAT. I've been reading Dr. Sears' book and was going to go with his schedule. Why is that not ideal? Why would your PEDS be relieved by you not using his schedule.

Crap! All this time I thought I was reading the right thing!

Hey Jess...I think its because his recommendation goes SO FAR against the AAP. In fact, my ped said he "went rogue" and I thought---hum, is that a bad thing?? ANYWAY I liked his schedule too--the one I went with is REALLY similar but I the main difference was the Prevnar vaccine. Plus, this one seemed much easier to follow and commit to memory.

I read Dr. Stephanie Cave's book and am going with her schedule. I didn't put on this on the post, but I've requested to split the MMR vaccine--they said it couldn't be done--but I'm still working on that. I'll keep ya posted.

you're a good mommy. i'm sure you read about this a few weeks ago, but just in case you missed it (how could that possibly have happened?? hmm...haha), here's a link to an article...

pretty interesting stuff...seems like all he-said she-said, and so difficult to discern. i've been frustrated and have pretty much stuck to the AAP schedule (except for declining a few of the dumb ones, like rotovirus) because it felt like information overload to me. anyway, thanks for sharing your schedule!!

I'm glad you posted about this. I would really appreciate you emailing me your research too! This is something that's been in the back of my mind, but I haven't done any research myself yet.

I cannot believe Adelai is 3 months already!!! Craziness. Seems like she was just born!

Is it too late to slow it down (vaccinations) if we got the others the last time? He didn't have his 3 month appt until he was actually almost 4 months anyway.

Will you please email your research? I am six pregnant and am starting to worry and think about what is right for my baby. the research that suggests that Autism may be linked to vaccines really worries me. I am really considering the modified immunization schedule. My email is rachelstum@comcast.net thank you Rachel

My baby boy is due for his 2 month shots tomorrow and while I want to wait and do a modified schedule, his father wants to go for the regular schedule. Please send me any information you have. How come you are only doing one dose of PREVNAR? My son is 2 yrs old. My husband and I decided not to give him any shots at all. However, I just moved to Peru, where there still are a lot of the diseases that we get vaccines for....so we want to give him SOME shots. So we gave him one polio shot before we left the States and now that I am already in Lima I am struggling trying to make these people understand that it's MY choice what they inject my child with. LOL. (The nerve to tell me "the doctor" recommends this or that and that they did not have a list of ingredients available. IDIOTS!)
Anyway, I am making my own little schedule for him and yours looks awesome. Pretty much space out the doses 2 months and space out the shots 1 month. I see that you only one dose of PREVNAR, why? I thought they wanted to give us 4.

Also, I was told her that kids can get HepB by sucking on the same toy. is that right? and when you say "wait until a year before school" do you think I should give it to my son if he's going to daycare? (there are no laws for vaccines and daycares here in Peru)
